What are the Top 10 Elements of the Authoritarian Playbook?

  1. Divide and rule: Foment mistrust and fear in the population.
  2. Spread lies and conspiracies: Undermine the public’s belief in truth.
  3. Destroy checks and balances: Quietly use legal or pseudo-legal rationales to gut institutions, weaken opposition, and/or declare national emergencies to seize unconstitutional powers.
  4. Demonize opponents and independent media: Undermine the public’s trust in those actors and institutions that hold the state accountable.
  5. Undermine civil and political rights for the unaligned: Actively suppress free speech, the right to assembly and protest and the rights of women and minority groups.
  6. Blame minorities, immigrants, and “outsiders” for a country’s problems: Exploit national humiliation while promising to restore national glory.

Domestic terrorism refers to acts of terrorism that occur within the borders of a single country and are carried out by individuals or groups operating within that country. 


The term "terrorism" generally involves the use of violence, intimidation, or the threat of violence to create fear and achieve political, ideological, religious, or s

Domestic terrorism refers to acts of terrorism that occur within the borders of a single country and are carried out by individuals or groups operating within that country. 


The term "terrorism" generally involves the use of violence, intimidation, or the threat of violence to create fear and achieve political, ideological, religious, or social objectives. 


When this type of violence occurs within a nation's own borders and is perpetrated by individuals or groups with a connection to that country, it is labeled as domestic terrorism. 


Typical groups listed on the Domestic Terrorist list include White nationalists, anti-government groups, and hate groups, with 89% being radiclized from the far-right wing faction of the Republican Party and Right Wing news sources.


Their funding is coming from dark money and Russian ties.

Direct attack: This is the final stage, where an individual or group, influenced by the disseminated message, carries out a direct attack or act of violence against the targeted group or individuals. The person or group committing the violent act may have interpreted the message as a call to action.

  4. Harder to Predict: They are more unpredictable than individuals involved in coordinated group activities. 
  5. Lone wolf attacks can be motivated by various factors, including political ideologies, religious beliefs, or personal grievances. Efforts to counter lone wolf terrorism often involve monitoring online activities, identifying radicalization indicators, and enhancing community awareness.
